The Elf off the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition Gone Bad

I honestly did believe this shelf gig was going to be great. ‘Get out and see the world,’ they said. ‘Experience the joy of wide-eyed kids, holiday cheer, and the Christmas spirit,’ they promised. ‘Finally leave your parents’ basement for once in two hundred and sixty-seven years,’ they told me. I was sold.

And off I went. As a member of Santa’s spy squad, I headed down south for the holidays to help the big guy decide who’s naughty and who’s nice. It was going to be a wonderful change of pace from the screwing, hammering, sanding, painting, and wrapping happening in Ol’ St. Nick’s workshop.

Or so I thought . . . ~Horace the Elf

In this for-parent’s-eyes-only parody of the popular holiday title, The Elf on the Shelf, readers laugh along with Horace as he goes AWOL from his Christmas duties. This photo-story set to verse is the unauthorized (and hilarious) tale of one disgruntled little helper with a gift for making mischief.

I am a huge fan of parodys and this did not disappoint. This year, my friends have all been talking about their Elf on A Shelf. Them and their kids are having a blast with it. My kids just today asked for one. Hopefully I can get one on clearance this year for next. We shall see.

Imagine what your elf does when you are not around. Well, Horace drinks the spiked egg nog, tries to get in bed with Barbie, friends a nutcracker and tells him he has the worst job (why would you put nuts in your mouth?) Becomes a cat toy and hates his name all before high tailing it out of the house and heading for somewhere nice!

This is fun book and makes a great gift especially if you have an Elf on the Shelf in your family. The adults will secretly chuckle when they think about their elf!

Okay, so a few years ago, “The Elf On The Shelf” was a huge hit, and we caught on and did it this year. The kids actually now go to the Elf, “Mr. Jangles” and tell on one another instead of running to mommy or daddy. I love the idea, and the kids get a kick out of trying to be the first one to find Mr. Jangles in the morning (slippery sucker tends to move at night). THIS book, however, is a great parody for adults and if you don’t have kids around, a great coffee table book for the holidays. No, this is not a “sweet and innocent” type book, but it intentionally pokes fun at the latest Christmas tradition in an adult fashion. The trick is to keep it away from the kiddos!

The book is hilarious. And I wasn’t at all disappointed when it didn’t include a green elf because NO WHERE IN THE LISTING IS IT EVER EVEN SUGGESTED THAT IT INCLUDES ONE! Just as described, this is NOT a children’s book!! I got exactly what I was promised when I bought it, and as someone who has had a “scout elf” for the last five years, this book was a lot of fun. Very highly recommended for PARENTS!
