We absolutely love our plush Elf on the Shelf. We are using her exactly like the original elf was intended. I think it is crazy that the darn tag that came on her hat said that she wasnt a real Elf on the shelf. Yes she is. Elves can come in any size or shape. Tall or short. Fat or skinny. Boy or girl. Red or green. Why should it matter if she is wood, ceramic or plush. If you want to let your kids play with her great, but there is no reason she cant be used exacty like the original elf.
My daughter is 7 and this is our first year with the Elf. She has been a hit since the day we got her. She has been having fun and also causing mischief around our house. She flies to the N Pole every night to report to Santa how the kids are. She returns every morning before we wake to play and have fun. The kids are not allowed to touch her for it may cause her to lose her magic.
What a blast. I would recommend this Elf. She is just as much fun as the original but half the cost.

My first born got this Christmas of 2011, after being read elf on the shelf at her school it was all she could talk abut. Christmas morning we left clues that said it was from the elf that led her to her big Christmas present. Then she walked into her room finding the elf sitting on top the gift a built Lego table. She takes this elf everywhere and rarely will sleep without it. My youngest daughter decided she wanted one too so we were scared we couldn’t find one since this was a target exclusive thing. When I found this I ordered it right away on amazon. We now have 2 of these elves in the house and 2 happy girls. Looks almost exactly like the target one. Maybe even a little rounder in the face, but that could be because my oldest has slept with her so much the fluff might be slightly flattened. A good alternative to the one that is included with the book. Much sweeter and innocent looking than the book one for sure. I would say its just like any other stuffed animal plush, but the lore and myth that the kids get wrapped in because of it is priceless.

Update: Dec. 2012 Doll still going strong been in 2 wash loads because it is in a 3 year olds hands all the time. Cleans up nicely. I expected the red to turn the white pink. Not the case came out the wash looking brand new. Both the target one and the amazon one wash well. My oldest maybe has spent no more than 6 night without it in her bed. We got her the book this year with the girl elf and she seems to have her plushee pal even closer to her when she sleeps. This elf on the shelf thing is bigger than I imagined. I underestimated the magic of this story to kids of their generation. Its some work moving the elf from the book every night but I know in a few years I will be wishing I could bring such joy to the eyes of my kids so easily.

A Friend had purchased the Boy version of this Elf, and when I realized there was a Girl – I wanted to get two as we have two little Girls that will just love them I’m sure. They seem to be very well made and they certainly are precious.
